HOT and COLD

Explain the words HOT and COLD  to the students. Ask one student to leave the room or to cover his or her eyes. Hide a word card or flash card in the room (you can use one card from our Game "Jogo da Memória das Profissões" - PLAY TO LEARN - JOGOS EDUCATIVOS). Ask the student to look for the hidden word. In order to help the student, the rest of the class say COLD when the student is away and HOT as he/she approaches the hidden card.

CREATE YOUR OWN SIMILES WITH THE ANTONYMS GAME.

1. Present a few similes and the sample sentences to the class.

Ex. The baby's skin was as white as snow.

Finishing up the project by himself, the boy was as proud as a peacock.

2. Choose one card with one adjective from the  "JOGO DOS ANTÔNIMOS" DA PLAY TO LEARN JOGOS EDUCATIVOS. Students pick out one card and create similes by using the adjective on the card. Emphasize that unique ideas are welcome. The teacher shouldn't be judmental, and accept any similes as long as they are logical.

Ex. As big as Mount Fuji.

As soft as cotton candy.

Students compare their ideas and discuss which ones are interesting or funny.

This activity fosters students creativity and encourages their active participation in the lesson.

My suggestion is to write the similes on cards and hang them in class for a while.

A Conversation Idea - How do you kill time?

GOAL : Think about what you do...
               List Activities
               Talk about them

LEVEL: Intermediate to Advanced

GROUP WORK

Here is a simple idea to generate conversation among your students. We all know that there are moments during the day when we have nothing to do, no plans. For example: when we are waiting for a teacher or a friend and so on. How do we occupy these periods of time, either mentally or physically?
For example:

WHAT YOU DO DURING THE TV ADVERTISEMENTS?

Make a list of what the students say
(my students got these)

Talk to my BROTHER
I read something, anything
I get up and so something
I go to the bathroom
I change channels
I look for something to eat or read
I call a friend
I water the plants
I put the children to bed
I brush my teeth
I unload the washing machine/put the clothes on line

You can also get the students to tick off the ones which they regularly do and check the most common activities, after you can put them in groups to discuss what they do , how often they do it, and why they like to do it.

HAVE FUN WITH YOUR STUDENTS!!!!

ENJOY TEACHING AND THEY WILL ENJOY LEARNING!!!!

Fold-Over Stories

Fold-over Stories

Level: Low Intermediate to Advanced

Objective:   Learn the questions words
                        Tell Stories
The story can be developed into a composition…or
The story can be developed to be told aloud to the class.
                        Write simple ideas

This is an old favourite. Give each student a sheet of blank paper. Write the following words on the board in a vertical line: WHO, WHAT, HOW, WHERE, WHEN, WHY.

Explain that everyone will be writing a sentence story. Write an example on the board, explain, asking for suggestions.
1.      Tell them to write someone’s name at the top of their paper, i.e., their own, a classmate’s, the teacher’s, a famous person that everyone knows; fold the paper over once so no one can see it, then pass the paper to the person on their right.
2.      Write on the received paper what the subject did (suggest funny or outrageous actions), fold it over and pass it on to the right.
3.      Continue to write one line, how they did it (adverbs), fold and pass; where-pass; when-pass; and last of all, why (because…) and pass it one more time.
4.      Have the students unfold their stories, and them silently. Help anyone who cannot read what the others wrote, or doesn’t understand.
5.      Ask one student at a time to read “their” story aloud, or turn the stories in for the teacher to read. Funny!

WHO
(a person)

WHAT
(action - verb)

HOW
(way,manner)

WHERE
(place)

WHEN
(time-date)

WHY
(reason)

Headmaster Game

Headmaster Game

Level: Medium to Difficult
This activity can be used with Intermediate and Advanced students to stimulate lots of discussion!!!

Have each student take out a piece of paper and their dictionary. Write on the board:
You are the new headmaster of this school. You have two years to make this the perfect school. You can have as much money as you want, but you must spend it all in 2 years.
·         What changes would you make immediately?
·         What changes must be gradual?
·         What would you do to make it a better school?
·         What changes would you make?
Be specific. For example, don’t say hire better teachers. You must say how you would find better teachers or what kind of teachers you would hire. Also, remember you must think like a headmaster, not like a student! Making school easy and letting the students do no exams or homework will not make parents happy!
Give the students 15 minutes to work alone. Then put them in groups of 3-5 with a leader to organize their thoughts. Each group’s leader will give its “report” to the other students during the following class period.
If your students have a small vocabulary you can help them out by listing on the blackboard areas of discussion: teachers, buildings, classrooms, activities, dorms, lunchrooms, curriculum, sports, playground, library, bathrooms, schedules, music, art, etc.

This is a great activity for all ages. We always run out of time!

Twenty Questions - Guess the object

The teacher can cut from magazines or catalogues pictures of  several articles  and paste on a cardboard.

It is necessary to have many, so that each pair has at least 3 or four pictures.

Students choose one card and don't show it to their partners, the partner has to guess what object it is asking the questions below, or others.

The teacher  can write, as a suggestion, on the board questions such as:

Would you find this in a house?

Does it weigh more than 5 kilos?

Does it have wheels?

Does it make noise?

Do you have one?

Can you eat it?

Can you wear it?

Is it used in  the summer?

Students may work in pairs and may only answer YES or No questions and keep track of the number of questions.

They can ask many other questions as long as the answer is only YES or No.

The goal is to guess the objet that is in the picture asking less than 20 Questions!!!

Have fun!!!

PEOPLE WHO....

The aim of this activity is to complete sentences and also take advantage of the contributions in order to generate debate and interaction.

How: Just hand out the following sheet with the heading

PEOPLE WHO.....

and tell students they have to complete the sentences with realism, not just adding a grammatically correct ending

1. ...park their cars on the footpath.......
2. ...who don't pay taxes....
3. ...who throw garbage on the floor...
4. ... who give money to charities...
5. ... eat pop corn loudly at the movies ....
6. ... who drink and drive...
7. ... who travel a lot ....
8. ... who save lot of money....
9. ...watch TV all day....
10. ... go to the opera....
11. ... eat frog's legs...
12. ... climb the Everest....
13. ... hunt whales....
14. ... eat too much.....
15. ... drive too fast....
16. ... jump queues....
17. ... whistle at girls ....
18. ... smoke in public places...
19. ... earn a lot of money...
20. ... throw their old cooker into a field....
21. ... snore...

etc..... (add more)...

NB. The idea is to get personal endings... For example, for..

"People who eat pop corn loudly at the movies..."
I got:
annoy me
should eat them before the show
make a  lot of noise
have the right to do so!!!

As you can see, everybody has a different answer and opinion. The latter is what generates the talk.

Sou you kill two birds with one stone. You practice grammar and you get students talking.

I hope you and your students enjoy this activity.
